Foreign Ministry Holds Workshop on Qatar's Reporting Obligations under its Accession to Two International Covenants

The Human Rights Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a workshop entitled 'Qatar's reporting obligations under its accession to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights". The workshop was held in cooperation with the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South- West Asia and the Arab Region in Doha.

HE Director of Human Rights Department at the Ministry Ambassador Faisal bin Abdullah Al Hanzab said that Qatar has taken an important step in the protection and promotion of human rights and individuals under its jurisdiction by joining in May 2018 the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

He pointed out that this workshop comes within the framework of the continuous cooperation between the Department of Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South- West Asia and the Arab Region. It aims to raise the awareness of the participants about the rights and guarantees recognized in the two abovementioned international covenants.

Deputy Director of the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South- West Asia and the Arab Region Alaa Kaoud gave a detailed explanation of Qatar's reporting obligations under its accession to the two international covenants.

He pointed out that these two Covenants have a distinguished place in international human rights law and their provisions contributed to the development of human rights standards and the nature of the obligations of States parties under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, adding that the two covenants were published in the Official Gazette of the State of Qatar by two Emiri decrees and thus became part of national law.

The workshop will come to a close on Wednesday and address the rights and guarantees recognized in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the nature of the obligations of States parties under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, including reporting, and the guidelines for reporting under the this international covenants.
