Qatar Affirms Establishment of UN Cybercrime Centre in Doha Reflects Commitment to Support International Organizations, Promote Multilateralism

The State of Qatar affirmed that the establishment of the United Nations (UN) Regional Centre for Combating Cybercrime reflects its commitment to supporting international organizations and promoting multilateralism.
This came in a speech delivered by HE Ambassador of the State of Qatar and the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, Jassim Yacoub Al Hammadi, during a side event held in Vienna on the UN Regional Centre for Combating Cybercrime in Doha.
His Excellency explained that the UN Regional Centre for Combating Cybercrime in Doha can play a vital role in assisting member states in combating and preventing cybercrime through capacity building, knowledge sharing, and enhanced international cooperation.
He pointed out that the adoption of the UN Convention against Cybercrime last year placed additional responsibilities on the Centre, particularly with regard to promoting the convention and enhancing coordination and cooperation between countries in combating the criminal use of information and communication technologies.
His Excellency urged member states, particularly developing countries, to take full advantage of the courses and publications offered by the Centre. He called for expanding its activities by offering more training programs, issuing more publications, and working to facilitate countries' accession to the Convention on Cybercrime, with the aim of using its tools to enhance international cooperation and protect national security.
For his part, Assistant Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Hammadi, emphasized during a speech at the side event organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, that the UN Regional Centre for Combating Cybercrime in Doha is a successful model of international cooperation in combating cyber threats.
He stressed the importance of concerted international efforts to combat cybercrime, praising the vital role played by the Centre.
Al Hammadi pointed out that this event highlighted the diverse needs of countries in combating cybercrime, such as capacity building, international cooperation, and technical tools, which are essential elements for enhancing joint efforts.
He pointed out that Qatar began cooperating with the UN office in 2017 to establish a regional center to combat cybercrime, which culminated in the opening of the Centre in 2019.
He noted that adopting a unified global approach to combating cybercrime will contribute to raising awareness and ensuring the readiness of all countries, especially the least developed countries, to confront these threats.
