Qatar's Representative to the OPCW its Executive Council's 108th Session

HE Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and its Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Dr. Mutlaq bin Majed Al Qahtani, took part in the special session on Syria held during the OPCW Executive Council’s 108th session. The session was attended by HE Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic Asaad Al Shibani.

In a statement to the Executive Council, HE Qatar’s Representative affirmed that the participation of the Syrian Foreign Minister in the Executive Council’s proceedings marks a pivotal historic moment for the Syrian people, as it paves the way for eliminating the chemical weapons program left behind by the Assad regime. He described it as a fundamental turning point in the relationship between the new Syrian government and the OPCW, noting that this development represents a genuine start to opening a new page of constructive cooperation on this issue, in line with the aspirations of the free Syrian people for security, stability, and prosperity.

His Excellency expressed gratitude to the Executive Council’s member states for supporting the extensive diplomatic efforts undertaken by the State of Qatar, notably through its role in safeguarding the interests of the Syrian Arab Republic at the OPCW. He stressed that this active and effective involvement has substantially helped bridge many gaps, fostered trust and consensus, and opened new horizons for constructive collaboration between Syria and the organization.

For his part, the Syrian Foreign Minister thanked the State of Qatar for its ongoing, active support of Syria during this phase, particularly in facilitating communication and cooperation with the OPCW and in serving as a guardian of Syrian interests within the organization.
