The State of Qatar affirmed that regional and global stability cannot be achieved without a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian cause in accordance with international legitimacy.

It emphasized that Palestine is not merely a political issue confined to its geography but is a central issue that affects the fate of peace and stability in the Middle East and the world as a whole.

This came in the State of Qatar's statement delivered by HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Seif Al-Thani at the open debate of the UN Security Council on the "Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance" at the UN headquarters in New York.

Her Excellency said that since the beginning of the war on Gaza Strip, the State of Qatar's mediation efforts led to a ceasefire agreement and prisoner exchange in Gaza between Israel and Hamas on Jan.15, 2025, in partnership with the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt and the friendly United States. She expressed hope that the implementation of this agreement will pave the way for a credible political process leading to a comprehensive and just peace for the Palestinian cause, ensuring the right to self-determination for the brotherly Palestinian people and the establishment of their independent state with sovereignty on the 1967 borders.

HE stressed that the debate on practicing multilateralism, reforming global governance, and respect for international law as an indispensable process for preserving international peace and security is of great importance, especially as 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. This presents an opportunity to renew commitment to the historical mission set when the UN was established, which is "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war," and to build a just international system with the UN at its forefront as the first step in the path of multilateral action.

Her Excellency reiterated the State of Qatar's call for adopting a comprehensive approach that ensures the prevention of conflicts and the achievement of sustainable peace, highlighting Qatar's pride in its mediation efforts, which have contributed to de-escalation and the resolution of many conflicts.

She also explained that the State of Qatar's mediation efforts reflect its practical commitment to its foreign policy vision based on the principle of resolving conflicts through peaceful means, dialogue, and preventive diplomacy to contribute to strengthening international peace and security.

Double standards in international relations undermine the authority of the rule of international law, and therefore, ensuring the equal and uniform application of international law by all countries and international judicial institutions must be a priority, Her Excellency affirmed.

HE renewed the State of Qatar's call to strengthen the role of the Security Council in fulfilling its primary responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security, stressing the need to expedite the reform process of the Security Council to address the challenges of maintaining global peace and security.

HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Seif Al-Thani reaffirmed the State of Qatar's firm commitment to multilateral action and renewed the call to accelerate the reform process and improve global governance to enhance collective ability to respond effectively to global challenges.
