GCC States Reiterate Urgent Need for Comprehensive Solution to Sudan Crisis

Geneva| September 10, 2024
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states on Tuesday reiterated emphasis on the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to the Sudan crisis and urged the Sudanese people to calm down, prioritize the language of dialogue and join ranks, maintain the cohesion of national state institutions, and thwart the escalation of conflict and confrontations among the Sudanese parties.
This came in a statement delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar in Geneva Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi, on behalf of the GCC states, in the capacity of the State of Qatar as head of the Gulf Group, in an interactive dialogue on the report of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan, as part of the 57th session of the Human Rights Council.
The GCC states stressed the importance of the commitment of the two parties to the conflict in Sudan to end the conflict in light of the Jeddah Declaration signed on May 11, 2023 regarding the commitment to protect civilians, and the declaration issued on May 20, 2023 regarding the agreement on a short-term ceasefire and humanitarian arrangements within the framework of international humanitarian law and human rights law.
Al Suwaidi expressed the GCC states welcome of Security Council Resolution No. 2736 issued on Jun. 13, 2024, which calls for the full implementation of the Jeddah Declaration on the Commitment to Protect the Civilians, and calls on all parties to ensure the removal of any obstacles, and to enable the full, rapid, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
They urged the Sudanese government and the Rapid Support Forces to engage seriously and effectively with the crisis resolution initiatives, including the Jeddah platform and the neighboring countries, among others, and reaffirmed their commitment to stand by the Sudanese people and continue to provide humanitarian aid, support, and contribute to alleviating their suffering.
