The State of Qatar Participates in Global Policy Dialogue on Climate Governance in Seoul

The State of Qatar participated in the Global Policy Dialogue on Climate Governance, held in Seoul, South Korea, on the occasion of the Global Green Growth Week organized by the Global Green Growth Institute.

HE Director of Policy and Planning Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Khalid Fahad Al Khater, represented the State of Qatar.

In a speech delivered during the opening session, HE Dr Al Khater reviewed the role of the State of Qatar in climate change, and addressed the outcomes of the Climate Change Conference held in 2012, which resulted in the Doha Climate Gateway, which paved the way for Paris Conference, and bridged the gap between developing and developed countries by reaching a consensus on the issues that were pending at the three conferences preceding the Doha Conference.

His Excellency said that the outputs of the Climate Change Conference held in 2012 had also been able to work out routes for the next three years until Paris 2015.

His Excellency noted that HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, announced the State of Qatar's contribution of $100mn to support small developing island states and the least developed states suffering from climate problems during the United Nations Climate Action Summit in September 2019.

The Director of the Department of Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that despite the challenges faced by the State of Qatar since the imposed illegal air and land blockade from the three neighboring countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council since June 2017, Qatar has not retreated from its international commitments, adding that Qatar is even more emphasizing the importance of responsible global partnerships to build a better future for the region and the world.

His Excellency praised the advanced position of South Korea on sustainable development and the cooperation between Qatar and Korea in this field.

His Excellency noted that the inaugural Ministerial Conference of COP18 was held in Korea, as well as the establishment of the Global Green Growth Institute in 2012

His Excellency explained that the State of Qatar is a founding member of the Institute, as well as that Doha Conference approved the location of the Korea Green Growth Trust Fund.

His Excellency also noted Qatar's support for the Global Policy Dialogue Program organized by the Stimson Center on the Global Government Project in the context of the Albright-Gambari Commission Report, and the recommendations on global challenges including justice, security and sustainable development.

The Global Policy Dialogue on Climate Governance was attended by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President of the Global Green Growth Institute, and President of the Stimson Center Brian Finlay.
