The State of Qatar Stresses Commitment to Empowering Women

The State of Qatar has affirmed Saturday its commitment to empowering women and providing support that will enhance their political, social, economic and cultural rights which is reflected in Qatar National Vision 2030 and national development strategies. It also affirmed commitment to implementing the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women .
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar before the third Committee at the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly on empowering women, readout by member of the Qatari delegation participating in the 73rd UN General Assembly Mariam Ali Al Mawlawi.
She said that the State of Qatar renews its commitment to empowering women to exercise their rights and participate in all aspects of life to achieve the fifth goal of sustainable development. She noted that the advancement of women is one of the main priorities of the State of Qatar.
The Qatari official referred to the announcement made by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, during a leaders' roundtable on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, of the State of Qatar's commitment to providing education to one million girls by 2021, in support of the Charlevoix declaration released by the G7 in June 2017.
Al Mawlawi discussed the International Labor Organization (ILO) welcoming of HH the Amir's release of law No. (13) for the amendment of the provisions of law No. 21 of 2015 and law No. 1 of 2017, guaranteeing the free movement of migrant workers by revoking exit permits for most migrant workers in Qatar. She said that the law was an important step in eliminating trafficking of women and girls. She highlighted other efforts of the State of Qatar in supporting women's rights, including the book released in cooperation between the Qatari and Colombian permanent delegations entitled "Her Story" in the presence of UN Secretary-General.
She stressed that the legislation the State of Qatar adopted recently aimed at providing an enabling environment for women's employment, ensuring their participation in public life and balancing work and family requirements. She added that these policies helped Qatari women demonstrate their ability and success by taking a leading role in all aspects of public life.
Al Mawlawi stressed that the State of Qatar is capable of many achievements in the field of prevention and protection against domestic violence through a comprehensive protection system that includes the adoption of legislation criminalizing domestic violence, the development of a follow-up mechanism for the protection of victims of violence, the establishment of specialized centers and units to provide protection services.
