Qatar Expresses Concern over Terrorist Organizations' Acquiring of Weapons of Mass Destruction

The State of Qatar reiterated its concern about the danger of terrorist organizations' acquiring of weapons of mass destruction that poses threats to peace and security in the region and the world, especially in light of the tensions and conflicts in many regions of the world, particularly the Middle East.

The State of Qatar affirmed its firm belief that sustainable peace and stability in the world cannot be achieved while the possession of weapons of mass destruction continues, calling on all to unite efforts to promote development and achieve economic and humanitarian prosperity for peoples which should be a priority at all levels.

This came in the State of Qatar's statement delivered by member of Qatar's delegation participating in the works of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York Maha Mohammed Al Nisf before the Assembly's First Committee on the item "Other Weapons of Mass Destruction".

The State of Qatar reiterated in the statement the importance of intensifying joint efforts to prevent such extremist terrorist organizations from acquiring such weapons in accordance with Security Council resolution 1540 (2004), which stated that nuclear, chemical and biological weapons posed a threat to international peace and security, and decided that all Member States shall refrain from providing any form of support to non-State actors that attempt to acquire, manufacture, possess, transport, transfer or use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.

The statement pointed out that in line with the State of Qatar's policy on the elimination of weapons of mass destruction and the fight against terrorism, it continues to work with its partners in the international community in this regard and implements its international legal obligations in preventing the proliferation of these weapons, including chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, based on being a party to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction and the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction in addition to nuclear Non-Proliferation treaties.

The past decades, the statement said, have shown that weapons of mass destruction constitute an imminent danger to humanity and this has prompted the international community to work to avoid the dangers that may result from the indiscriminate use of such weapons through the adoption of international instruments aimed at eliminating these weapons.

The statement also called for mobilizing all efforts so as not to repeat the tragedies of the past and to save humanity from the scourge of using these weapons as well as to give hope for a new era free of these terrible weapons.

The State of Qatar stressed in its statement that the common responsibility of Member States obligates them to work effectively to get rid of weapons of mass destruction, to dispel fear from the hearts of human beings and to instill hope in a safe life away from the bitter and terrifying experiences as a result of the use of these weapons for prosperity humankind.
