Qatar Urges Cooperation between All States to Advance Goals of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

New York/ Information Office/ 04 October 2017/ The State of Qatar has stressed that advancing the goals and objectives of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development requires cooperation between all States and abstention from any actions that might harm Member States or influence solidarity among them.

This came in statement on Sustainable Development delivered by Ahmad Saif Al Kuwari, Third Secretary of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York, before the General Debate of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial Committee) of the UN General Assembly.

Al Kuwari added that while the UN system and the Member States have redoubled their efforts to create an enabling international economic environment for development, the State of Qatar is making great efforts to pursue its development plans according to Qatar National Vision 2030.

He stressed that the State of Qatar is facing a major challenge as a result of unilateral illegal measures against it which began with a cybercrime to level accusations against it and to be used as a pretext for imposing a siege that violates the principles of international law, international relations and human rights and contravenes the fundamental principles of the multilateral trading system, and has adverse impacts on n international economic cooperation.

Al Kuwari added that the State of Qatar, in spite of the challenges, would continue its development efforts and strive to overcome the consequences of those measures. It would continue to be a reliable international partner in promoting development and building international peace and security by continuing development and humanitarian initiatives and assistance it has always provided.

The Third Secretary of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York said that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aimed at peoples all over the world and constituted a comprehensive framework for efforts to promote world peace, eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions, and ensure that no one is left behind.

In the difficult circumstances facing today's world and the economic, environmental, humanitarian and social challenges, all countries urgently need to seize the opportunities inherent in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and send a strong message that the international community remains firmly committed to comprehensive action conducive to transformation, in addition to strengthening the global partnership to create an enabling international environment for development, taking into account the different capacities and levels of development of countries and respecting national policies and priorities.

Al Kuwari pointed out that the issue of comprehensive and sustainable development was also high on the State of Qatar's agenda, which considers the development process as a participatory approach that respects all human rights and is based on joint efforts among all members of society.

Ahmed Saif Al Kuwari, Third Secretary of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York, said that Qatar, as part of its efforts to meet its commitments to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, presented the voluntary national review during the 2017 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development that praised the country's development efforts and its effective role at the international level, adding that Qatar is looking forward to present next year a voluntary national review that will shed greater light on the alignment of national priorities with the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In line with its commitments and obligations to address the challenges of financing for development in a spirit of global partnership and solidarity, the State of Qatar will host a high-level meeting in 18-19 November 2017 to prepare for the 2018 Economic and Social Council of the forum on financing for development follow-up, Al Kuwari said.

The Paris agreement represents a pivotal stage in preserving life on our planet, he said, adding that the approval of the agreement by all the countries of the world reflects their political will to commit themselves to collective action in order to live in a clean, safe and prosperous environment for all and for future generations. The State of Qatar will work with the international community to translate the commitments made by its ratification for the Paris climate change agreement.

He stressed that the unsustainable use of natural resources, climate change, food insecurity, malnutrition, political instability and conflict required a more comprehensive and coordinated response from the international community, a special attention to the least developed and conflict-affected countries and an equal opportunities for all segments of society, especially women, children and persons with special needs and to provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills in line with the vision of 2030 agenda.

The Third Secretary of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York stressed the important role of trade as a powerful enabling tool for growth and development, an enabling economic environment and an open, inclusive, non-discriminatory and equitable multilateral trading system to be an integral part of that environment.

In that context, he stressed the importance of the conclusions contained in the report of the UN Secretary-General on international trade and development, specifically on the importance of trade promotion strategies addressing socio-economic and development concerns such as poverty reduction, job creation, food security, gender equality and environmental sustainability.

Concluding, Al Kuwari reiterated Qatar's firm commitment to achieve sustainable development for the benefit of all mankind and to play a prominent role inspired by Qatar National Vision 2030, in the area of international development cooperation.
