Qatar Underlines Importance of Using Nuclear Applications for Achieving Sustainable Development

The State of Qatar stressed that the international community was counting on sustainable development, not only because of its benefits in terms of human well-being and environmental protection but also because it had become the essential element for restoring stability to societies and maintaining international peace and security.
In a statement delivered by HE Ambassador Sheikh Ali bin Jassim Al Thani, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, at the meetings of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the State of Qatar praised the IAEA and its Director General's support for scientific research and development activities at universities and research centers in Qatar, as Qatar adopts the option of nuclear energy as part of the energy mix in the future.
In its statement, the State of Qatar called for greater attention to the development of nuclear energy applications, the promotion of international and regional cooperation in this field and the facilitation of access by developing countries to nuclear technologies and applications, stressing the central role of the IAEA in this context.
HE Ambassador Sheikh Ali bin Jassim Al-Thani pointed to Qatar's appreciation to the efforts being exerted by the IAEA to modernize its nuclear applications laboratories in Seibersdorf, noting that the State of Qatar has contributed 300,000 Euros to modernize those laboratories.
