Italian Ambassador: Qatar Becomes Favorite Destination for Italians

Doha/Information Office/16 November 2016/ The Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has hosted HE Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Qatar Guido De Sanctis to talk about Italian-Qatari relations with the presence of a large number of diplomats and officials of the Ministry.
HE the Italian Ambassador underlined the Italian-Qatari historical ties which began in the early seventies of the last century when Italy voted in favor of Qatar's accession to the United Nations, adding that since then the relationship between the two countries continued through constant communication with the Italian embassy in Kuwait until the official opening of the Italian embassy in Qatar in 1992.
Ambassador Guido De Sanctis said that he has been working in Qatar for three years, and with the end of this year he will return to Rome after 25 years in diplomatic work within Italy and abroad.
In this regard, the Italian Ambassador said that there are about 4 million Italian living abroad, pointing to the presence of Italian labor in GCC countries in general and Qatar in particular, where there are about 2,100 Italians.
He also said that the State of Qatar in recent years has become a favorite destination for Italians due to the development atmosphere which provides a lot of job opportunities for them, as well as the good reputation enjoyed by the State of Qatar that encourages foreigners to work in.
With regard to the cooperation areas between the two countries, the Ambassador said that his country's relationship with Qatar is extensive in multiple fields, adding that the most prominent features of this relationship in the economic side is the opening of an Italian trade office in Qatar for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.
The State of Qatar is experiencing an industrial transformation period as it seeks through its national vision for economic diversification, Ambassador Guido De Sanctis said, stressing Italy's willingness to provide its support as it is able to play an important role in this economic transformation.
In this regard, HE the Ambassador referred to the Italian Cooperation with Russia in this area as it, thanks to the Italian expertise in the industry field, become able to manufacture and has a strong economy.
Regarding the cooperation in the military field, Guido De Sanctis praised the defense agreement which signed between the two countries in 2010.
HE the Italian Ambassador affirmed the future of this promising relationship as Italy joined the countries' list that supply the State of Qatar with military equipment. He also referred to the negotiations between the two countries about the possibility of providing the Qatari Navy with a number of distinctive warships.
Regarding the cooperation in the field of energy, HE the Ambassador stressed that Italy produces just 10% of the energy as it depends on the other countries in providing its needs and the most important is of the State of Qatar.
He added that the State of Qatar is moving forward in the field of renewable energy in which there are projects and fruitful experiences such as innovation of Solar Boards that are able to withstand the heat and Italy is looking to take advantage of these experiences.
In conclusion, HE the Italian Ambassador Guido De Sanctis referred to the relations between the two countries in the sports field, in which he praised the Qatari interest in sports.
