Qatar Supports Political Solution to Yemeni Crisis

New York/Information Office/21 September 2016/ Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi has reiterated Qatar's support for the political solution to the crisis in Yemen based on the Gulf initiative and its executive mechanism, outcomes of the National Dialogue, the Riyadh Declaration and UN Security Council related resolutions, in particular resolution 2216. In his statement to the round-table meeting at the ministerial level on "The humanitarian situation in Yemen,", HE the Minister noted the contributions of the State of Qatar in the concrete humanitarian and relief efforts in Yemen, either directly or through its participation in the coalition to support the legitimacy in Yemen. At the meeting, which was called for by the British Minister of State for International Development, and the United Nations Undersecretary for Humanitarian Affairs, Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which was held in New York, on the sidelines of the 71st session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, HE the Minister of State Foreign Affairs also referred to Doha conference, which was organized by 13 regional and international humanitarian organizations to drum up donations for Yemen, where $ 223 million were collected , $ 100 million of which were raised by Qatari donors . The Qatari humanitarian organizations contributions and pledges exceeded $ 18 million, and the Qatari Red Crescent had established a field hospital in Yemen at a cost of more than $ 4 million. HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs renewed emphasis on respect for the Coalition for the rules of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and the keenness to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people, noting Coalition visible efforts to , whether by providing assistance, or by facilitating the arrival of humanitarian aid shipments and basic materials in coordination with Yemen's government and international relief organizations, as well as provide support in order to ensure the security of employees of international organizations and to facilitate the performance of their duties. HE the Minister stressed the Coalition's keenness and commitment to protect civilians, with special attention to children, as dictated by its obligations under international humanitarian law, as it follows the rules of engagement accurate and the process of selecting military objectives and other preventive measures in order to ensure the safety and protection of civilians and civilian targets, HE the Minister added. He referred in this context to the ""Joint Incidents Assessment Team (JIAT), "The Preparatory Committee for the Air Force" and "Compensation Committee" which were established in partnership with the State of Qatar. HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs emphasized that tackling the humanitarian crisis in Yemen requires addressing its causes, particularly the ongoing aggression committed by Houthis militias, and forces loyal to the ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh against the people of Yemen, which involves the use of the shells in populated areas, and the use of civilians as a way put them at risk, and assassinations, kidnapping and violation of rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as the recruitment of child soldiers, and obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid.
