New York - Media & Communications Dept. - 21 December 2023
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has unanimously adopted a resolution on the preparation and celebration of the 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family (IYF) submitted by the State of Qatar in 2004 on behalf of the Group of 77 and China at the United Nations, coinciding with Qatar's presidency of the Group of 77 and China that year.
The resolution included the State of Qatar's upcoming hosting of the conference to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the International Year of the Family in collaboration with the Doha International Family Institute (DIFI) scheduled to take place from Oct. 29 to 31, 2024.
The Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the UN Sheikha Al Maha bint Mubarak Al-Thani facilitated negotiations on the resolution, bringing viewpoints closer and achieving consensus during the consultations of the Third Committee of the UNGA in New York.
The IYF celebrations are based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which regards the family as the basic unit of society and emphasizes the need to ensure its fullest protection and assistance to enable it to fully assume its responsibilities within the community.
The resolution underscores that the preparation for the 30th-anniversary commemoration of the IYF in 2024 presents an opportunity to continue raising awareness of the goals of the International Year. It seeks to enhance cooperation on family-related issues at all levels and take coordinated actions to strengthen family-oriented policies and programs as part of a comprehensive and integrated development approach.
