The State of Qatar urged the Islamic Republic of Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to continue their interaction to end the remaining outstanding safeguards issues and to provide answers and information to the Agency's useful technical questions.

This came in a statement by the State of Qatar delivered by HE Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and IAEA's Governor from the State of Qatar Dr. Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi during the discussion by the IAEA's Board of Governors in Vienna of the item on implementing safeguards in Iran under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

HE Dr. Al Hammadi praised the effective role played by the IAEA in implementing its responsibilities to achieve the three pillars of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and in monitoring and verifying under the safeguards agreements signed with countries. His Excellency said that the State of Qatar fully supports the work and professionalism of the IAEA Director General, praising the agency's and its inspectors' credibility and technical accuracy in following up on its missions.

His Excellency discussed the two reports of the IAEA Director General on Iran, and the urgent need to achieve progress, especially regarding Iran's implementation of the agreement signed between it and the IAEA in March. In this regard, His Excellency said that the State of Qatar encourages Iran to deal smoothly and transparently with the IAEA and its inspectors to facilitate their work requirements to accomplish the mission assigned to them.

In the statement, the State of Qatar stressed that using diplomacy and serious cooperation between Iran and the IAEA would pave the way for the IAEA's Board of Governors to remove this item from its agenda, and create an encouraging atmosphere that would positively affect the efforts to return to implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The statement noted the mediation efforts made by the State of Qatar to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran to release a number of prisoners and establish a communication channel to address a number of issues agreed upon between the two parties, as the State of Qatar hopes that this agreement, after its full implementation in good faith, would lead to greater understandings that include the return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
