Qatar Reiterates its Efforts to Cooperate with International Partners to Settle Syrian Crisis

The State of Qatar reiterated that it will continue to seek, in cooperation with international partners, to support possible ways to constructively contribute to the settlement of the Syrian crisis through a purposeful political process that leads to a political transition in accordance with the Geneva Declaration and the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 to achieve the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people and preserve the unity, sovereignty and independence of Syria.
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by the First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sharifa Yousef Alnesf, before the United Nations General Assembly, on the "Report of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in Syria since March 2011", and under the clause of the prevention of armed conflict.
The statement of the State of Qatar stressed that accountability and the prevention of impunity is of paramount importance to deter the continuation or recurrence of crimes against humanity, stressing that accountability is a conducive factor to achieving reconciliation and sustainable peace and putting an end to the protracted Syrian crisis.
In its statement, the State of Qatar reiterated its support for the establishment of the mechanism and its activation, and providing the necessary support to it and the principle of accountability.
The statement referred to the positions of the State of Qatar towards the Syrian crisis, including commitment to provide humanitarian assistance to address the suffering of the brotherly Syrian people, and stressing from the beginning a peaceful settlement of the crisis, pointing out that it is the only way that guarantees stopping this suffering.
The statement of the State of Qatar stressed the need for the continued support of countries, the United Nations and other international organizations for the international, impartial and independent mechanism, and for it to obtain adequate and predictable funding from the regular budget of the United Nations, which contributes to enhancing its credibility and independence.
