Qatar Reiterates Support for UN Program of Assistance in the Teaching and Wider Appreciation of International Law

The State of Qatar reiterated its support for the United Nations Program of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law, and commended the valuable results achieved through it.

The State of Qatar underlined that it will continue to support all efforts aiming to strengthen the rule of law and to consolidate and raise the awareness of international law, which is a pillar for maintaining international peace and security and achieving the goals of the United Nations.

This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by Rakad Ajban Al Smaikh, member of Qatar's delegation taking part in the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, before the UN Sixth Committee (Legal) on Item: The United Nations Program of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law.

Al Smaikh said that consistent with the policy of the State of Qatar to support the rule of law at the national and international levels, and recognizing the importance of strengthening the international law, the State has continued to provide financial support to the UN Program to enable it to overcome the difficulties of its continuity, and thus contributing to assisting lawmakers from developing countries to participate in it, stressing Qatar's keenness on involving the largest number of Qatari jurists in the Program's sessions, in the framework of building legal capacity and raising awareness of the importance of international law.

He commended the valuable efforts made by the Office of Legal Affairs, the Codification Division and the Program's Secretariat in promoting and revitalizing legal activities under the Program in order to meet the changing needs of the international legal community in the 21st century, noting that in light of the tensions, conflicts and crises in the world today, there is a need more than ever to deepen knowledge of international law, including an in-depth study of emerging issues of the time, which increases the need for the he United Nations Program of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law, as well as the role of the Audiovisual Library.

He added that a rule-based multilateral system based on the principles of international law strengthens the joint efforts to build and maintain international peace and security and contributes to the prosperity of the humankind, noting that multilateral treaties have played a leading role in promoting the rule of law and in maintaining a rule-based international order.

He stressed the importance of providing the Program with the necessary resources to carry out its mandate, stressing that the respect for international law is the basic and only standard of conduct for states and the basis of international relations.

Knowledge of the fundamental rules of international law has a profound impact on the consolidation of international relations and the achievement of peace, he stressed, noting that the UN Program has been involved in assistance for 54 years and continues to play a key role in promoting and respecting international law, which is a well-established means of consolidating international peace and security and promoting friendly relations and cooperation between States.

He also noted the role of the Audiovisual Library in contributing to the achievement of the objectives of the Program by providing tools that could benefit a wide range of legal professionals, academics and others around the world.

He added that the fellowships and courses offered through the Program contributed to the strengthening of international law and had a significant impact on developing the capacity of those involved in the application of international law in all States, commending the efforts of the Codification Division of the Office of Legal Affairs in the publication of the United Nations Legislative Series, advisory summaries and judgments of the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of International Justice.
