Vienna / Information Office / October 01

The State of Qatar is participating with an official delegation in the international conference on the protection of civilians during armed conflicts, organized by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna in cooperation with the United Nations organizations.

Inaugurated today by the Austrian Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs Alexander Schallenberg, the conference, which was at the Austria International Convention Center, aims to draw attention to the widespread use of explosive weapons in populated areas as well as contribute to the development of concrete solutions to protect civilians.

The two-day conference will examine the direct harm to civilians caused by the use of explosive weapons and political and military practices in this context, in addition to international efforts taken to reduce the consequences of their use on civilians.

A political declaration is expected to be issued at the end of this conference, based on the recommendation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The declaration will include a summary of the most important discussions that took place during the conference, especially with regard to the increasing use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas in recent years, and the need to take rapid action at the global level to reduce these damages, and decrease the harm to civilians in particular.
