The State of Qatar Expresses Concern Regarding the Escalation of Fighting Between Libyan Parties

Geneva / Information Office / September 25

The State of Qatar expressed Wednesday its deep concern regarding the continued fighting between Libyan parties, particularly the latest attacks on Tripoli that caused an increase in the number of casualties, displacements, as well as damages to important public facilities at time when Libya is in desperate need of its youth and assets as attempts to transition towards a state of law.

Qatar warned that external interference in Libyan affairs, in addition to being a severe violation of international law, increases the sense of polarization in the country between the differing sides. The State of Qatar added that external interference also helps spread chaos and instability in the region.

This came in the speech given by legal researcher at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maryam Al Maraghi during a general discussion on the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on Libya, as part of the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council.

Al Maraghi condemned the violations of international law that are taking place in Libya, particularly forced disappearance, and the targeting of airports and hospitals, as well as the use of torture. She called on all Libyan parties to respect international law and bring an end to fighting and return to the political process.

She also called on the international community and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on Libya to provide the help needed in terms of containing Libya's illegal immigration and human trafficking problems.

She stressed in her concluding remarks that the State of Qatar will remain a supporter to the unity and stability of Libya, as well as to the government of national accord and the Skhirat agreement. She expressed the State of Qatar's commitment to support all international efforts, particularly that of the UN Secretary General's special representative, to bring an end to the conflict in Libya.
