The State of Qatar expressed its appreciation to the United Nations for convening the "Nelson Mandela and Peace" Summit, praising his role as a leader and human symbol of his life, in order to uphold the human values enshrined in the human conscience.

This came in a statement delivered by HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi at the United Nations Summit on "Nelson and Peace" held in New York, on the sidelines of the general debate of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

"The Summit is an opportunity to reflect on the life and heritage of the late Nelson Mandela," HE the Minister said. "It reminds us of our responsibilities not only as members of the United Nations, but as human beings sharing one human value and one destiny.

HE the Minister called for cooperation to achieve the goals of the United Nations, which meet with the legacy and mission of Nelson Mandela.

He praised the struggle of Mandela, who carried on his back the concerns of his people and the future of humanity. He was distinguished by the support of oppressed peoples, the bias of the poor and the oppressed, and the dedication to defending humanitarian issues, where he has become a symbol of freedom, justice, equality, reconciliation, human rights and peace.

Taking advantage of Nelson Mandela's legacy to strengthen the United Nations in maintaining and promoting international peace and security requires us to learn from the path of this great human symbol, to apply the ideals and values he has advocated, to renew the commitment to promote human rights and to ensure development for all, as well as the prevention and settlement of conflicts by peaceful means and the achievement of sustainable peace ".

HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, said that for Nelson Mandela, peace was not just a lack of fighting, but peace was to create an environment in which everyone would flourish, regardless of their race, color, creed or gender.

His Excellency warned that allowing differences to be a cause of discrimination and violence, which would diminish the common humanity. These differences are elements that enrich human civilization and add to the richness of their diversity.

In the context of joint efforts to achieve peace and put an end to violations of international law, HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs said: "We must recall Nelson Mandela's affirmation from this rostrum of the historic role of the United Nations as a peacemaker, his call for resolving conflicts and taking collective effective measures to prevent threats to peace and their elimination ".

He referred to Mandela's belief in humanity's ability to change the world and make it a better place, expressing confidence that the international community is capable of achieving the goals of the United Nations, foremost of which are peace and the suppression of violators of human rights and international law.

Concluding, HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, lauded the struggle of Mandela, where he faced injustice, tyranny and violations of human rights through faith in human values and the rule of law and enabled respect for those common humanitarian principles.

He was respected by his people and the world. "His struggle is a shining message to those who are in favor of human rights abuses and international law, the rule of history would not be merciful, they would be on the dark side of history," he said, stressing that Nelson Mandela's legacy will remain a source of hope for yearning for freedom, dignity, justice, equality and peace.
