Qatar Underlines Keenness on Achieving the Goals of Sustainable Development

The State of Qatar will continue to play an important role in the global partnership for development and will spare no effort in achieving the goals of sustainable development, member of Qatar's delegation participating in the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly Mohammed Ali Al Marri underlined.

Addressing the Second Committee on Item 26, "Towards Global Partnerships" in New York, Al Marri said that the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan is a milestone in the efforts to ensure sustainable development. It is an integrated vision that provides a rare opportunity to take another step in the common endeavor to implement the goals of this ambitious plan and address the obstacles to development.

He noted that meeting the requirements for the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan requires taking a comprehensive action leading to transformation and to strengthening the global partnership in order to create an enabling international environment for development.

He underlined that achieving the ambitious and transformational objectives of this plan can not be achieved without strengthening effective partnerships and cooperation between the public and private sectors, and giving civil society organizations, the youth and the academic community an opportunity to play their role in this field.

He noted that the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan had given particular attention to this issue, where the seventeenth objective highlights the importance of strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development, stressing the importance of the global leadership role of the United Nations as the focal point for cooperation among a variety of actors.

He agreed with the recommendation of the UN Secretary-General in his report that United Nations entities should be encouraged to integrate multi-stakeholder partnerships into their core business models.

Al Marri said that the State of Qatar's foreign policy is based on the principle of cooperation and partnership to face common challenges. Qatar attaches great importance to promoting the South-South cooperation as a key factor in achieving the goals of sustainable development.

"It is our responsibility and commitment to strengthen our regional and international partnerships that we continue to play a prominent and increasingly important role in providing development and relief assistance to many countries in the world facing economic, humanitarian and natural disasters, as well as official development assistance," he underlined.

"Our success as an international community in the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan and the translation of the Plan's objectives into real action require that we commit ourselves to work towards the balanced and integrated implementation of the Plan, the creation of fruitful cooperation and the effective use of all sources of funding in a spirit of partnership and solidarity at the global level, taking into account different circumstances, capacities, needs and levels of development, and respect for national policies and priorities," Al Marri concluded.
