Qatar Committed to Promote and Protect Human Rights

Geneva/ Information Office / 02 December 2014/The State of Qatar said it's paying increasing attention to the issue of business and human rights as well as the UN "Protect, Respect and Remedy" Framework and Guiding Principles ." . It noted that the promotion and protection of human rights was a strategic choice and cornerstone for comprehensive reform policy pursued by the State. This came in a statement delivered by HE Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim Al -Thani, Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the high-level meeting of the third session of the Forum of business and human rights in Geneva. He noted that this attention by the State was reflected in the establishment of the national working group on the issue of business and human rights, chaired by the human rights Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Economy and Trade, Ministry of Environment, Qatar Petroleum, Diar Company and Ooredoo Company. He explained that the mandate of the national team, which comprises all stakeholders, was to promote and raise awareness of United Nations guidelines on business and human rights, and including them in national frameworks. Qatar organized last November a training workshop on "business and human rights" in cooperation with the United Nations Working Group on business and human rights and the United Nations Centre for human rights training and documentation for Southwest Asia and Arabic in Doha, he added. Qatar, through its membership in the Human Rights Council and other UN and regional organizations would spare no effort in contributing actively to support efforts to promote the guidelines, action and cooperation with the Working Group on business and human rights, he stressed .
