Qatar Calls International Community to Find Quick Political Settlement to Syrian Crisis

Geneva/ 18 June 2014/ The State of Qatar has strongly condemned the continuing air raids launched by the Syrian warplanes on civilian areas and the use of explosive barrels which led to the deaths and injuries of a large number of civilians, mostly women and children. Qatar also condemned the Syrian regime's use of toxic gases, such as chlorine gas, in a clear breach of UN Security Council Resolution 2118. This came in a speech of the State of Qatar delivered by HE the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Faisal bin Abdullah Al Hanzab before the 26th session of the Human Rights Council Agenda item 4 on the interactive dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic. HE Faisal bin Abdullah Al Hanzab voiced strong condemnation of the State of Qatar for the Syrian regime's use of siege, starvation and cutting off humanitarian aid policies as means to achieve political or military goals. He stressed that the continuing failure of the International Community on resolving the conflict in Syria led to the death of more than 160, 000 people and spread a state of instability and chaos to neighboring countries. HE the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva also emphasized on the importance of coordinating the movements of the International Community to find a quick political settlement to the Syrian crisis and put pressure by all possible means on the Syrian regime to force it to implement the Geneva 1 communique, especially with regard to the establishment of a transitional governing body with wide powers to enable it to maintain the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Syria. He also expressed the condemnation of the State of Qatar of the illegal presidential elections, took place recently in Syria, which aim to undermine international efforts to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis in accordance with Geneva 1 communique. HE the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Faisal bin Abdullah Al Hanzab called on to take all necessary actions to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations in Syria and brought them to criminal justice and to consider the possibility of referring the Syrian file to the International Criminal Court, wondering at the end of his speech how the Commission will deal with 'Caesar Report' which enjoys high credibility and includes conclusive evidences of serious violations committed by the Syrian regime?
