Qatar Renews its Firm Commitment to Work with UN to Provide Assistance to Afghanistan

The State of Qatar has renewed its firm commitment to work with the United Nations, especially its mission, to provide assistance to Afghanistan, explaining that its constructive engagement in Afghanistan is clear and specific, and is represented in the implementation of the goals and references of its foreign policy that is based on the preventive diplomacy approach based on mediation, and the resolution of regional and international disputes through dialogue and negotiation, and helping the Afghan people to achieve freedom, peace and development, in addition to strengthening regional and international security and stability.
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar, delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, before the United Nations General Assembly, which held a briefing session on the "situation in Afghanistan".
Her Excellency stated that the State of Qatar had made strenuous diplomatic and political efforts over many years in the context of facilitating negotiations between local and international parties, to end the war in Afghanistan, which resulted in reaching the joint declaration between the United States of America and the Taliban movement to bring peace to Afghanistan in February 2020, which was welcomed by the UN Security Council.
Her Excellency commended the current ongoing efforts to facilitate and strengthen channels of communication between international partners and the Afghan caretaker government, with the aim of promoting peace, protecting civilians, delivering humanitarian and development assistance, and protecting and promoting the political, economic and social rights of the Afghan people, including the rights of children, women and girls.
Her Excellency reminded the international community of one of the largest evacuation operations in modern history that the State of Qatar facilitated, as it evacuated 80,000 people and provided support to them in Doha during their temporary residence, including shelter and health care.
Her Excellency referred to the high-level pledging event to support the humanitarian response in Afghanistan, organized by the State of Qatar in partnership with the United Nations and international partners, in order to alleviate the suffering of Afghans, where Qatar pledged to provide US 25 million to the Afghan people as part of the humanitarian response plan in this country.
Her Excellency also made clear that the State of Qatar has set the goal of building peace and development as a priority of its engagement in Afghanistan in the post-war phase, especially the issue of empowering women and girls, pointing to what the Education Above All Foundation in the State of Qatar has done during the past two years with the Institute of International Education, based in the United States, and Qatar Fund for Development, to provide an initiative to help 250 Afghan students, half of whom are women, through the Qatar grant project for Afghan refugees to resume and continue their studies.
Her Excellency praised the vital role of the United Nations mission in providing assistance to Afghanistan, as well as regional and international partners to support the Afghan brothers of all categories and nationalities, in the context of the international community's endeavors towards consolidating peace, security, stability, development and strengthening the protection of human rights, including the rights of women, girls and children.
HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani stressed that the goal of the State of Qatar will always be to work for Afghanistan to enjoy stability and prosperity, calling in this regard for collective action with a strong and sincere political will, so that Afghanistan does not become a tragic address for the failure of the international community.
