This came in the speech of HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Ambassador Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, which he delivered at the 48th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), during the 'general debate on the oral update by the High Commissioner (HC) for Human Rights' under the second item on the Council's agenda.

Al Mansoori said during his speech that they thank the High Commissioner for her oral update and commend her efforts and the members of her office in carrying out their tasks.

Al Mansoori added that they agree with the High Commissioner's opinion on the importance of addressing the phenomenon of climate change, noting that the Cabinet of the State of Qatar adopted at the beginning of this month the National Climate Change Plan, which comes within the framework of the State of Qatar's commitment to adopt strategies to confront climate challenges through investment in renewable energy, diversification of the economy, and the optimum use of natural resources. In the same context, the State of Qatar has committed itself to continuing to provide support to the countries most in need to deal with the repercussions of climate change, Al Mansoori said.

His Excellency pointed out that in the context of enhancing political participation, the State of Qatar will organize on October 2 the first legislative elections for the Shura Council, saying that this step comes in the interest of strengthening democracy by expanding popular participation and providing citizens with the opportunity to choose members of the Shura Council.
