Qatar Participates in Meeting of IAEA Board of Governors

Vienna/Information Office/ 09 March 2017/ The State of Qatar participated in a meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which was held between 6 and 9 March.
Qatar's delegation to the meeting was chaired by HE Sheikh Ali bin Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar's Ambassador to international organizations in Vienna and the permanent representative to the IAEA, and included HE Yousef Sultan Laram, Director of International Organization at the Foreign Ministry, and HE Lieutenant Major (Air) Hassan Saleh Hassan Al Nisf, deputy head of the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons.
The Board of Governors examined a range of issues on its agenda, including issues related to nuclear safety, nuclear technology, the verification of Iran's implementation of its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and the implementation of safeguards in both North Korea and Syria as well as the establishment of the IAEA Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) Bank.
The meeting also re-appointed by acclamation the current Director General Yukiya Amano to a further term of office for four years, from 1 December 2017 to 30 November 2021.
HE the Ambassador delivered Qatar's statement on the election of the Director General of the IAEA, congratulated Amano on his re-election and thanked him for his fair and wise stewardship of the Agency, and stressed his support for him to achieve the noble goals of the IAEA.
