Qatar Reaffirms Commitment to Provide an Environment Conducive to Youth

The State of Qatar reaffirmed Monday its commitment to continue its efforts in providing a youth-friendly environment and to provide support at the national, regional and international levels to enable them to contribute effectively to peace-building, in addition to promoting a culture of peace, tolerance and respect for religions which would contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security.

The statement was made by HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani in an open debate at the Security Council on maintaining international peace and security and its relationship with youth.

Her Excellency said that international efforts will be needed to meet the challenges and threats facing the world because of poverty, the persistence of conflict and war, and the maintaining of international peace and security. Her Excellency also noted that there were no doubt that the1.8 billion young men and women who make up a large part of the world, some of which suffer from conflict and war, are able to face these challenges and threats and bring about change in their societies. HE the Ambassador added that investing in helping the youth realize their hopes and aspirations, and develop their capabilities, in addition to the promotion and protection of their rights.

HE the ambassador highlighted the establishment of Youth Advisory Committee in the State of Qatar in 2017 as a continuation of the efforts of the State to strengthen the role of youth in society and in the implementation of Qatar National Vision 2030. The Committee includes 20 young men and women elected from different sectors, and aims to promote a culture of dialogue and participation among young people and enable them to express their views and aspirations, and activate their leadership and creative skills.

HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed Bin Saif Al Thani stressed that the State of Qatar recognizes the importance of dealing with the root causes of violent extremism that can lead to terrorism. In 2016, the State organized the High-level thematic debate of the General Assembly on children and youth affected by violent extremism in cooperation with President of the General Assembly and with the participation of many Member States, which drew important conclusions and recommendations on ways to protect youth and children from violent extremism.

Her Excellency also pointed out that the State of Qatar has taken many measures that will support the efforts exerted in this regard, which led to the formation of many institutions, programs and initiatives in the fields of education, employment, job creation, economic empowerment and training and capacity building of young people at the national, Especially in conflict and war-affected areas, including the World Summit for Innovation in Education WISE, the Qatar Upholding Education for Syrians' Trust' (QUEST), the Education for All and the Children's Science program, which contribute significantly to the provision of services Lim is a high quality for millions of children and young people around the world. As part of Qatar's international cooperation efforts, the State is keen to cooperate and provide support to international bodies and mechanisms related to youth issues and counter-terrorism. The State of Qatar is a founding member of the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund(GCERF), Strengthen the ability to confront the agendas of violent extremism.
