Qatar Stresses Importance of Vital Role of Older Women in Intergenerational Cohesion and Preservation of Social Values

The State of Qatar underlined the vital and important role of women in general, and older women in particular in society and the family, through the promotion of intergenerational cohesion and solidarity, the preservation of social values and heritage, and the contribution to development and economic progress.

This came in the State of Qatar's speech, delivered by Second Secretary at Qatar's Permanent Mission to the UN Office in Geneva Muneera Mohammed Al Rumaihi, during the Annual Full-Day Discussion on the Human Rights of Women - Panel 2: "The rights of older women and their economic empowerment", in the framework of the 41st session of the Human Rights Council.

Al Rumaihi stressed the importance of promoting and preserving human rights of women, mainly older women, and the need to provide them with all kinds of support in order to enable them carry out their roles effectively.

By a adopting a package of legislative and institutional measures, the State of Qatar has ensured that older persons, especially women, have access to social services, taking into account their particular needs, Al Rumaihi noted.

She added that the Qatari Constitution guaranteed the protection of the elderly. The article 21 of the Constitution calls for the protection and care of the elderly for the protection of the family and the society. At the same time, the relevant legislation promoted the rights of the elderly with regard to social security, housing and employment.

The State of Qatar also established the Centre for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly "Ehsan" which provides specialized programs aimed at serving the elderly and promoting community awareness of their basic rights and needs, she said.

Al Rumaihi added that the State of Qatar has been keen on empowering women by paying attention to their issues within the framework of the national development programs, building their capacities and providing them with full opportunity to contribute effectively to the comprehensive renaissance of the country. She noted that the State adopted in this regard specific initiatives aimed at enhancing women's participation in the labor market, political participation and decision-making positions, which positively reflected on the strengthening of women's role as an active and essential partner in development.
