Qatar Calls for Steadfastness in the Face of Attempts to Undermine Jerusalem

Cairo / Information Office / December 05

The State of Qatar called for the need to stand firm in the face of the futile attempts to undermine the city of Jerusalem and undermine its historic and religious status.

Qatar reiterated its steadfast position in support of the Palestinian cause and the support of the brotherly Palestinian people who seek to regain their rights. This position is based on the Arab position committed to establishing the peace process on the basis of a comprehensive and just settlement based on the resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab peace initiative based on the two-state solution, ensuring the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This came in a speech delivered by HE the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the League of Arab States Saif bin Muqaddam Al Buainain, at the emergency meeting of the Council of the League of Arab States at the level of permanent delegates today.

HE stressed the importance of the meeting under the circumstances and challenges and the serious developments facing the Palestinian issue, which is the central issue of the Arab and Islamic world, and the city of Jerusalem, which faces a serious challenge, and requires to stand firm, work hard and to take serious and effective steps to stand in front of the absurd attempts that affect the historical and religious status of Jerusalem.

HE said that the United States' relations with the Arab and Islamic nation are seriously challenged by the US administration's intention to announce the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, in a step that some parties may not realize its dimensions and serious implications for the peace process, security and stability in the region.

HE Al Buainain warned that such a decision would lead to undermining the negotiating process and harm the peace process between the Palestinian and Israeli sides. This process is faltering because of a long history of Israeli intransigence and arrogance and due to bias and selectivity in the implementation of international legitimacy resolutions, which affirms the right of the Palestinian people to their independence, freedom and dignity and their right to establish their independent State with East Jerusalem as its capital.

HE stressed that the US administration is strongly called upon today, more than ever before, to assume political and moral responsibility, and not to subject issues affecting the destinies and lives of peoples and their heritage and cultural and religious beliefs, to the calculations of narrow policy, and not to take any step that will make it loose its role as mediator in the Arab-Israeli conflict, and complicates its efforts in this regard.

He pointed out that the clear message that should be sent by the meeting today is to stand firm in the face of such intentions, and to warn about its serious consequences, and that the Arab states and peoples will not stand idly in the face of such a development if it happens, which perpetuates the Israeli occupation, and will not accept any step affecting the situation in the city of Jerusalem in its Arab and Islamic character.

HE expressed Qatar deep concern over the possible repercussions of such an order, and called on the United States in particular and the international community in general not to take any step that would undermine the status of Jerusalem, and to abide by the resolutions of international legitimacy which consider the city of East Jerusalem as an integral part of the Palestinian occupied territories in 1967.

The Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the League of Arab States stressed that the unity of the Palestinian people is the cornerstone and the basic guarantee for achieving its legitimate demands to end the occupation and establish its independent state. In this regard, he urged the Palestinians to complete the steps of unity and to unite national efforts to end division in order to face all challenges.
